Answer :

Cellulose is a straight chain polysaccharide composed only of ß-D-glucose units which are joined together by 1,4-ß-glycosidic linkages i.e., the ß-glycosidic linkages between C-1 of one glucose and C-4 of the next glucose unit.

Additional Information :

Carbohydrates are optically active polyhydroxy aldehydes or ketones or the compounds which produce such units on hydrolysis. Most of them have a general formula, Cx(H₂O)y, and are called hydrates of carbon.

Classification of carbohydrates on the basis of their behaviour on hydrolysis :

Monosaccharides cannot be hydrolysed further.

  • Glucose, Fructose, Ribose, etc.

Oligosaccharides yield 2-10 monosaccharides on hydrolysis.

  • Sucrose, Maltose, etc.

Polysaccharides yield large number of monosaccharides on hydrolysis.

  • Starch, Cellulose, etc.

Cheers!
