the smallest structural and functional unit must resemble the organism as a whole that means shows all its properties
so we can't say cell organelles as basic unit as they don't show all the properties of the body
like mitochondria helps in respiration but it can't Excrete
but the cell as a whole shows all life process as that of the whole body respire excrete etc
