divyathadani: Although cell organelles have specific structures and perform specific functions but they cannot be called structural and functional units of living organisms. This is so because they can perform their functions only when they are within a living cell. They cannot function outside the cell as an independent unit.

A cell organelle is a structure found in the cytoplasm of a cell and it performs a specific function. E.g, Mitochondria ,Endoplasmic reticulum, Chloroplasts ( Present only in plant cell ), Golgi Complex , Lysosomes etc. All these organelles perform specific function within a cell and thus are equally important for a cell to perform various metabolic activities therefore it cannot be said that a particular organelle is structural or functional unit of living organism. However, it is a cell that contain all these organelles and therefore able to perform all the functions in a body and thus,a cell is known as the basic structural and functional unit of life or known as building blocks of life.
