The G0 phase is a period in the cell cycle in which cells exist in a quiescent state.

G0 phase viewed as either an extended G1 phase, where the cell is neither dividing nor preparing to divide, or a distinct quiescent stage that occurs outside of the cell cycle.

Neurons and red blood cells are examples of terminally differentiated cells.

When these cells reach their final mature state, they do not need to divide ever again.

For this reason, the cells leave G1 and enter an alternative state called G0 (read G-zero) where they stop dividing permanently.
