The first trading posts were set up in Surat in 1619. Over the next few years, several other trading posts were set up in Madras ( Chennai ) , Bombay ( Mumbai ) & Calcutta ( Kolkata )

In the Easter part of India, Orissa was the first state where the British opened their first factory.

This was mainly done to trade along with the East India Company.
