  • The central idea of the poem "My Heaven" is the contemplation of the heaven of the child.
  • The child's heaven is a world of happiness and safety and love.
  • The child's heaven is a place of pain and danger.
  • The child's heaven is a place of the light and the darkness.
  • This heaven is dim, and shadowy and far-off.
  • But it is still there, beckoning, inviting, full of wonders and beauties.
  • It is the heaven of God's children, into which the child is called upon to enter, never knowing what it will bring.
  • The only thing that the child can possibly know is that it will bring something more wonderful still.
  • It is, to some extent, a dark and disturbing world.
  • It is a world that shows inner turmoil, a world of emotional conflict, and a world of struggle.
  • In these poems, Hawthorne seems to have been deconstructing the idea of heaven, in which children dream of a safe and happy place to live.
  • The setting of "My Heaven" is a domestic ideal.
  • But the poem becomes more and more unpersuasive as its pace quickens.
