CENTRAL IDEA OF THE POEM 'MERCY' 《》>
In this famous poem Portia appeals Shylock to be merciful on Antonio. She throws light on the qualities of Mercy by praising that mercy is a natural quality. It can not get by force. It comes to the earth from heaven like a gentle rain. It is a double blessing. It gives pleasure to giver as well as taker. It makes a man powerful and popular. It decorates the king better than his crown. Mercy is a devine virtue. It is greater than anyother power. It is a quality of God Himself. It is a quality which makes a man honourable. Mercy becomes more effective when it is mixed with justice. So a man without Mercy can not be human being.
