The poem describes the feelings and thoughts of a scholar when he reads books written by great authors.  He believes that books are a man's best friend and whenever he feels lonely, he picks up a book to feel better.   He is grateful to these authors and their virtues which have inspired him.   He hates their vices and wants to avoid them when he himself becomes a great writer.

Answer:

This poem is written by Robert Southey.

The central idea is very encouraging as the scholar feels that reading books can never make a man lonely and they are the best friends of a man.

To avoid loneliness one should read books and should not vice between any authors as their works are always inspiring.
