The central theme of this poem can be expressed as remorse. Since the poet keeps on expressing where and why his childhood had gone and the thought of questioning himself 'was it those days' states clearly that he regrets his childhood. So remorse can be apt to the central theme.  Also the poet recalls about the past childhood days recalling if his childhood had gone die to his understand of maturity and adulthood.
