Akash was patriotic and he was right according to himself for returning to India from America since he was able to save many lives even though he had to sacrifice his life for others.

Key Points from 'Patriotism' by Ramendra Kumar

  • The short story 'Patriotism' was written by the award-winning children's author Ramendra Kumar.
  • The entire story is themed around Patriotism, that is, one's love for or devotion to their country.
  • The story is centered around a Grandpa and his grandchildren, Naina and Ajith.
  • Throughout the story, Grandpa was trying to implant real patriotism in the mind of Naina and Ajith also by giving a true example of Akash, the best doctor who sacrificed himself while saving others.
  • According to Grandpa, patriotism can be projected by everyone by doing simple deeds with respect and not necessarily being heroic.
  • Akash was one of the best doctors who completed his master's education in America along with his ten other friends. But he later returned to his homeland India when his friends decided to stay in America in the lure of money and fame.
  • Meanwhile, Akash was deeply indebted to the parent country that made him grow and be educated making him the person he is now. He returned from America even though he was sure his parents will never agree with his decision.
  • After returning, he thought of providing medical services in rural areas and also saved many lives when an epidemic broke out. Being in constant contact with patients made his own life in danger and passed away later.
  • Even at the last moment, Akash never regretted his decision and conveyed to his parents that this was his chosen path and he is deeply satisfied by the fact that he was able to save many lives even though he lost his own life in the end.
  • Grandpa described the story of Akash to the children to make them understand that there are martyrs in the battles of life too and also to make them know the true essence of patriotism and patriots.

It was a right decision made by Akash to return from America to India and serve his nation.

  • Akash went to USA for master degree after completing his MBBS in India.
  • He thought it was his duty to serve his mother land, which spent lot of money for his education and it had done so much for him.
  • He wanted to repay its debt by serving for the people of his own mother land.
  • He decided to settle down in India.
  • This portrays his patriotism with gratitude in his heart.
  • While serving the patient during the pandemic, he himself got infected and passed away after some days.
  • Serving one's own nation is a very respectful duty to do. Dr. Akash is definitely a great personality who didn't care for his own life rather served many people in need.
  • He was respected for his sacrifice and that is the reason the villagers paid homage to him by building a small memorial hospital in the name if Dr. Akash.
