Project Crocodile is India's second largest species conservation program, after the Tiger conservation program.
Whitaker and his team had done an incredible job to protect the gharials. They collected around 12,000 gharial eggs which were incubated and hatched. After hatching, more than 5,000 juveniles were released into Protected Areas and sporadic monitoring was carried out.
However, due to the lack of effort from the river people put all the effort to waste and just 2 gharials are alive in the Mahanadi riverside.

Whitaker and his team aimed to protect the gharials.
Working on it they collected 12000 eggs which were safely incubated and hatched.
After the hatching of these eggs, Whitaker and his team send the juveniles into a protected area where they can be safe and sound.
They have released more than 5000 juveniles and monitored their activities carefully to protect them.
Since the river people didn’t take any part there are only 2 gharials alive on the riverside.
