WESTERN GHATS :

The western Ghats lie in parallel to the western coast. The range starts from the border of Gujrat and Maharashtra which are broader but they gradually narrow down.

They run for about 1,600 kms in the state of maharastra , Gujrat, Goa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The western Ghat is one of the world's ten hottest biodiversity hotspots.

Their average elevation is 900-1600metres . they are continous and can be crossed only through the passes like pal Ghat, Thal Ghat, bhor ghat. They face the rain bearing winds and cause orographic rainfall.

EASTERN GHATS :

The Eastern Ghats run from West Bengal in the north, through orissa, Andhra Pradesh to Tamil Nadu in the south. They are eroded and cut by the rivers Godavari, Krishna and kaveri.

At the south end the Eastern Ghats are served ranges of low hills. they are discontinouus and irregular.

Mahendragiri (1,051 m) is the highest peak in the Eastern Ghats. Shevroy hills and javedi hills are located in the south- east of the Eastern Ghats. the famous hill stations like kodaikanal are in Eastern Ghats.

The nilgiri hills which run east from Western Ghats to the kaveri river is a forested corridor that connects Eastern and Western Ghats and across which the elephant population crosses the range between Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats.
