Prefix + word root + primary suffix + secondary suffix

Given compound,

CH2=CH-OH

Here,

PREFIX = not given in this compound.

WORD ROOT = ‘eth’ is used for compound containing 2 carbon atom.

PRIMARY SUFFIX = ‘ene’ is added to the word root for C=C bond.

SECONDARY SUFFIX = Alcohols {-OH} word for secondary suffix is ‘ol’ .

[Note]

The terminal ‘e’ of primary suffix (ane, ene and yne) is replaced by secondary suffix if secondary suffix begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u).But, secondary suffix is added to the primary suffix without replacing terminal ‘e’ if it begins with a consonant.

Therefore;

IUPAC NAME = Eth + en ‘e’ + ol

= Ethenol

Also known as [Vinyl alcohol (enol)], which is unstable and rearranges itself into carbonyl compound.
