HOW TO WRITE THE IUPAC NAME OF THIS PLEASE and only draw the structure

(1) Draw out the molecular structure carefully based on formula. First count number of carbons and make sure your structure has the same number. The middle C with no H’s indicates that it would be bonded to four other carbons/substituents.

(2) Next, count the longest chain of carbons that form a continuous backbone. That would be 5 carbons. The prefix for five is penta-

(3) Look at the substituents that are not on the backbone. There are 2 CH3’s (methyls). You have to indicate which carbon on the backbone EACH of these substituents are found in. They are both found on the third carbon of the chain. If the methyl groups were found on the carbon to the right or left it would be 2,2-dimethyl since we want to give the LOWEST number carbon to the substituents.

(4) You also need a numerical prefix before the substituents if there is more than one of the same kind (di- in this case for 2 methyls)

(5) Putting all pieces together the answer is 3,3-dimethylpentane

Answer: 3,4 diethyl hex -3 - ene
