CH₃-CH₂-CH₂-OH →CH₃-CH₂-COOH  is an example of Oxidation Reaction.

Oxidation means controlled combustion.
When Propanol [ C3H7 -OH] Is heated with alkaline potassium permanganate solution or acidified dichromate solution , it gets acidified to Propanoic acid [
CH₃-CH₂-COOH  ]

                                              Alkaline KMNO4
CH₃-CH₂-CH₂-OH  + 2[O]    ---------------------→  CH₃-CH₂-COOH +H2O
                    Nascent Oxygen  Acidified K2Cr2O7

This reaction an be carried out by adding 5% aqueous solution of KMO4 in NaOH solution to propanal drop wise till purple colour of KMNO4 no longer disappears.

On warming the test tube containing propanol and alkaline KMNO4solution gently in a hot water bath. Propanol is oxidized to Propanoic acid .
