The reaction is shown below.

CH₃CH₂Br + KCN → CH₃CH₂CN + KBr

Whenever alkyl bromides, in the form if R-X, where R is the alkyl group and X  is the halogen group, react in presence of KCN (potassium cyanide), then alkyl cyanides R-CN are produced as the main product and potassium halide, K-X is produced as the by-product.

The reaction is shown below:

CH₃CH₂Br + KCN → CH₃CH₂CN + KBr

Ethyl cyanide (CH₃CH₂CN) is the main product.
