When 1-bromoethane ( CH_{3}CH_{2}Br ) is reacted with sodium ( Na ) in the presence of dry ether , butane ( CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{3} ) is formed .

The chemical reaction is as follows -

2 CH_{3}CH_{2}Br + 2 Na  →  CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{3} + NaBr

  • This reaction is known as the Wurtz reaction .
  • At room temperature and atmospheric pressure , Butane exists as a gas .
  • The molar mass of Butane ( CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}CH_{3} ) is 58.12 g / mol .
