The name of the given compound is Pentan-1-al.
- While naming an organic compound, few rules that are listed below need to followed.
- First select a parent chain that contains the maximum number of carbon atoms which further decides the root word. For example: for a chaing of 6 carbon atoms we use hex, for a chain of 9 carbon atoms we use non, for a chain of 4 carbon atoms we use but
- Then in the chain search for double bonds and triple bonds, if present then add the term "ene" with the root word and "yne" with the root word respectively.
- Start the numbering from the carbon atom which is nearest to a functional group.
- For the functional group given i.e. Aldehyde we use the suffix "al". For example we use "oic" for a carboxylic acid compound, "ol" for an alcohol compound.
As there are 5 carbon atoms in the parent chain the root word comes as "pent", as there are only single bonds present so we use "ane"(we remove 'e' when a suffix has an 'a' in it) and as the functional group in the compound is present at the first carbon atom and it is an Aldehyde so we use "al".
Thus the name of the compound comes to be Pentan-1-al.
