Addition of O2 and removal of H2 is called oxidation.

Addition of H2 and removal of O2 is called reduction.

In this equation,

CH4 + 2O2--------------CO2 + 2H2O

Here,

C is oxidised to form CO2
and
O2 is reduced to H2O

oxiding agent ------ O2
reducing agent ------CH4
