CH₄ is not obtained by Wurtz reaction.
- The corey house synthesis forms an alkane from the reaction alkyl halides with lithium divinylcuprate.
- Alkanes can also be prepared by reduction of alkyl halides , the reaction is as follows:
CH-Br + 2Na + BrCH₃ dry ether CH₃-CH₃ + 2NaBr
- Wurtz reaction is a similar reaction with sodium metal but can only produce alkanes with even number of carbons. Therefore we cannot get CH₄ from it.
- Kolbe's reaction can also produce alkanes by electrolysis.
