Pyotr Petrovich Milkin was a single young man. Daily, he visited Kondrashkin's house and had his dinner and supper there. Kondrashkin was a court counselor, who is having seven daughters. Pyotry had a love affair with one of the Kondrashkin’s daughters. Everybody in that town thought that Pyotr is going to marry Natsya only.
One day, his friend asked him, about the marriage with Natsya. Pyotr was a coward man and he refused to accept the love affair with Natsya. So he went to Kondrashkin and said that he is an irresponsible person, he never Natsya, he had some health issues, and finally, he said that he was mad. His character is sketched as a coward and irresponsible lover in this story.
