Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian woman who stepped in space and grew up in a family where hard work and her curiosity was encouraged by her parents.

Explanation:

She went to school when schooling was considered as a luxury for girls in India  those days. After lot of struggle she did her bachelor degree in Aeronautical engineering and had a tough time to go to USA for higher studies. She has started her career in NASA research center which was her dream job.  She was the first Indian woman who traveled in space. In 2003, She took her second space travel but died in Columbia space shuttle.
