Government intervention in food distribution was seen for the first time
in 1940, during World War II, just before the Bengal Famine of 1943.
But, PDS was formally launched in 1947 to provide succour to the hungry,
needy and downtrodden. Several changes and interventions have been made
to the Public Distribution Scheme by succeeding Governments, more so
after food sufficiency was attained by the country in the decades of the
sixties and seventies. It is a food security system providing rice,
wheat, sugar and kerosene through Government monitored fair price shops.
PDS is controlled by the Central and State Governments.
Even though a lot of grievances have been expressed by the beneficiaries regarding insufficient quantities being distributed and the quality of the items being supplied, the PDS in India has helped in an immense way to keep hunger at bay by interrupted supplies at Government controlled low prices.
