What is a Complex sentence ?

  • Complex sentence is a sentence that has 2 independent clauses with their own meanings.

Clauses :

A sentence has 3 parts :

  • Subject
  • Object
  • Verb

All the three when come together form a sentence.

Now there can be two more parts :

  • Phrases
  • Clauses

Both of them are oposite terms.

Phrases : This is a part of sentence that cannot stand alone. It needs a continuation. This neither inclued subject nor verb.

Eg : The rose => She loved the rose.

Clauses : This part has subject and verb. Though it can stand alone ; we don't get a complete sense , but they make a sense.

Eg : Exercise is necessary. => Exercise is necessary for healthy living.

Clauses are further divided into dependant and independent.

=> Dependant clauses : In the definition of clauses we have top that do they can stand alone they do not make a complete sense. This type of clauses come under dependent clause. They need a specific act to complete their meaning.

Eg :

  • She loves pizza but hates other junk foods.

=> Independent clauses : They make a complete sense and can make a meaningful sentence.

Eg :

  • He fled as soon as he saw the police.
