changes in dna usually occurs by mutation..sometimes these are useful for one property to start.as dna is a heredatory material so it tranfered from one generation to another. when these changes in dna gets accumulated in any generation they start a different function in that generation. so we can say tgat dna useful for one property can become useful later for a different function.
