(i) 'The teacher told the student to work hard if he wanted to make his career.'

(ii)'The old lady said that peacocks dance with joy when it is about to rain.'

  • When we change a sentence from direct speech to indirect speech, we follow some rules that modify the sentence to make it meaningful.
  • After we remove the inverted commas and quotation marks, the tense is changed, usually to simple past. The tense of the verb also changes as in (i), unless it is a universal truth as in (ii).
  • Pronouns change to the third person as the speaker is being reported.
