When someone talks in indirect speech about something,he has already seen that happen or heard about it.For him/her,the mode of presentation is past tense,something like,yeah these things happened that day.

On the other hand,when we write something in direct speech,the mode of presentation is present,It is said in the same way like it happened.Like copying the same dialogue he said that day.
