1. Direct Speech:- They said, " We have registered for classes"

Indirect speech:-They said that they had registered for classes.

  • Direct Speech- Saying exactly what someone has said is called direct speech.
  • Ex:- She said, "I am writing a letter to my mother".

  • Indirect Speech- Reporting someone's thought which he/she had said, without using that person's exact words. It is also called as Reported speech.
  • Ex:- She told that she was writing a letter to her mother.

  • Remove all inverted commas or quotation marks.
  • Use the conjunction "that" before the indirect statement (except in case of imperative and exclamatory sentences).
  • The reporting verb ‘say’ is changed into ‘tell/told’ if it is followed by a verb.
  • Change in pronouns of first and second person in Direct speech to third person in Indirect speech.
  • The modals used in the sentences change like; Can becomes could, May becomes might and Must becomes had to /would have to.
  • End the sentence with a full stop.

(b) If the direct sentence contains the universal truth, then it remains unchanged in the Indirect Speech.

(c) Do not change the change the modal if it is Could, Would, Should, Might and Ought to.
