Seems you have miss understood. We can change the reported speech into indirect speech and its already in direct speech.

Let's it to be explained for clear conception.

Just for example,

1)Ranauk said, "I am going to the park".

In this sentence,

Ranauk said is the reporting verb and I am going to the park is the reported speech.

2) Rima says, "I love to sing song".

In this sentence,

Rima says is the reporting verb and I love to sing song is the reported speech.

3) Mother said  to Rahul, "Will you go to market?"

In this sentence,

Mother said to Rahul is the reporting verb and will you go to market is the reported speech.

4) They say, "They don't drink tea."

In this sentence,

They say is the reporting verb and they don't drink tea is the reported speech.

5) The monk said, "The earth moves round sun".

In this sentence,

The monk said is reporting verb and the earth moves round the sun is reported speech.

Rules to change from direct to indirect speech:

  • We should always follow the sense of the sentence wheather it is a statement or inquiring something or requesting something or expressing any sense.
  • We should always follow the tense of the reported verb.
  • We should not use any inverted comma in case of indirect speech.
  • Instead of comma we should use 'that' or words according to sense such as if its inquiring something then , 'ask', if any sense then , 'exclaimed' or 'sorrow', if praying some thing then , 'pray', 'request', if ordering something then, 'order' and so on but as per the tense of the reporting verb.
  • The person of the reported will get change as per the person of the reporting speech.
  • The reporting sentence may be of any kind but while changing into indirect speech then it will be changed into assertive one.
  • In case of universal truth or the speech of any famous person, there will be no change in the tense of the reported speech.

Now let's change the above sentences:

1) Ranauk said, "I am going to the park".

⇒ Ranauk said that he was going to the park.

2) Rima says, "I love to sing song".

⇒ Rima says that she loves to sing song.

3) Mother said  to Rahul, "Will you go to market?"

⇒ Mother asked Rahul wheather he would go to market.

4) They say, "They don't drink tea."

⇒ The say that they don't drink tea.

5) The monk said, "The earth moves round sun".

⇒ The monk said that the earth moves round the sun. (Universal truth)

Now as per your question:

Tom said, "My father is playing  piano".

⇒ Tom said that his father was playing piano.

Seems, the reporting verb is in past tense and here indicating Tom's father, so instead of my father, 'his father' will be used.
