There are minimum two independent clauses in a compound sentence, but no dependent clauses. A compound sentence must have  minimum two independent clauses. A simple sentence is distinguished from a compound sentence by the presence of only one independent clause. A compound sentence has three or more independent clauses but no dependent clauses; however, if dependent clauses are introduced, that becomes a compound-complex sentence, which we shall examine later.
