  • 4. Direct Speech - The teacher said,” The sun rises in the east”

Required Answers:-

  • 1. Direct Speech - Ravi said, “Everything happens for a reason."

Indirect Speech:- Ravi said that everything happens for a reason.

  • 2. Direct Speech - Ravi said, “Everything happens for a reason.”

Indirect Speech:- Ravi said that everything happens for a reason.

  • 3. Direct Speech - She said, “God is never in hurry, but he is always on time.”

Indirect Speech:- She said that God is never in hurry but He is always on time.

  • 4. Direct Speech - The teacher said,” The sun rises in the east”

Indirect Speech:- The teacher said that the sun rises in the east.

  • Direct Speech - Tia said, “I am tired.”

Indirect Speech:- Tia said that she was tired.

Explanation:-

Here, for question 1 to 4 the rule we used:-

  • 1. When the reported speech is a universal truth, then the tense of reported speech wouldn't change according to reported verb. For example:-

The teacher said,” The sun rises in the east” Here, the reporting verb is The teacher said which is in Simple past tense and reported speech is The sun rises in the east which is Present Indefinite as well as universal truth.

The easiest of narrations is of facts and universal truths. No change is made in the tense and syntax of reported speech because you cannot convert them into past, and it will be illogical to convert anything that contains universal fact into past tense, like you can never say; earth was round, Light was made of seven colours or stars were far away from the earth. Facts are always treated as present. The reported speech will be used in indirect narrations quite as it is.

For some examples:-

  • He said, “Two and two make four.”

He told that two and two make four.

  • Teacher said to the class, “earth revolves around the sun.”

Teacher told the class that earth revolves around the sun.

  • She said, “Water boils at 100 degree.”

She told that water boils at 100 degree.

  • He said, “There are seven days in a week.”

He told that there are seven days in a week.

For question no 5,

  • 2. The sentence we were given is Tia said, “I am tired.” The basic rules of changing direct speech to indirect are:-

  • Remove the inverted comma’s from the direct speech and replace them with an appropriate conjunction. (Here we used that.)

  • Change the pronoun of reported speech accordingly. ( I becomes She according to Tia)

  • Change the reporting verb according to the reported speech. ( If reporting verb is given in Past tense then the tense of the verb of Reported Speech will change into corresponding Past tense. So, I am tired becomes She was tired )

For some examples:-

  • Direct: The teacher said, “I am suffering from fever.”

Indirect: The teacher said that she was suffering from fever.

  • Direct: She said to me, “I took the breakfast in the morning”.

Indirect: She told me that she had taken the breakfast in the morning.
