Question :-
Change the Narration :- Rita said to me, "Did you complete your work?"
Answer :-
Rita asked me if I had completed my work.
Things to remember while changing to Indirect Speech :-
- The tenses may not change if the statement is still relevant or is a universal truth. Eg. “I know her address,” said Gopal. (Gopal said that he knows / knew her address. )
- The tenses do not change when the reporting verb is in the Present Tense. Eg. He says that he is unwell. ; He says that he has passed the text.
- The pronouns change in relation to the hearer and reporter. Eg. He said to me, ‘I don’t believe you.’ (He told me that he didn’t believe me. )
- Pronouns of First Person (I, we) change according to the speaker.
- Pronouns of Second Person (you, your) change according to the person being spoken to Eg. He said to me, “You have done a good job.” (He told me that I had done a good job. )
- ∙ Pronouns of Third Person (he, she, it) remain unchanged
