More Information:-

When we refer to the exact words as said by the speaker, we use the direct speech.

When we report what somebody said or thought in our own words, we use the indirect speech.

Examples:-

He said, 'I am new here.' (direct speech)

He said that he is new here. (indirect speech)

Changing Direct speech to Indirect speech:-

  • The verb should be changed to past tense.
  • Remove the inverted commas ('....')
  • Use reporting verbs such as said, thought, asked, followed by that.

Note: If you want to change interrogative sentences into indirect speech, then you can use asked, enquired, demànded as reported verbs.
