Direct and Indirect Speech in the English Language

In Direct speech,  we simply repeat what someone said word to word without any changes. Quotation marks are used to enclose the words.

For example, Mike said, "I am not going to school."

In Indirect speech, we repeat what someone said in our words. words can be different but the meaning should be the same. Quotation marks are not used in indirect speech.

For example, Mike said that he was not going to school.
