After changing the direct speech into an indirect speech we will get -

I asked why I was getting a hug then. My son replied that he hugged me because I was the best daddy in the whole world and the best captain. Then I refused and said to Jon that I was afraid.

  • In the English language, we can use two types of speeches, Indirect speech and Direct speech.
  • While writing in the direct speech we use the exact speech spoken by the narrator and we keep it in inverted commas.
  • While writing in the indirect speech we change the direct speech to a sentence from a third-person perspective. We need to change the tense of the sentences accordingly as well.
  • In the first direct speech, the speech is in the present continuous tense and it is an interrogative sentence. So in the indirect speech past continuous tense will be used.
  • In the second direct speech, the tense is simple present tense. So in the indirect speech, simple past tense will be used.
  • In the third direct speech, the tense is simple present and it contains the negative word "no". So in the indirect speech, simple past tense will be used and the word "refused" will be used.
