Indirect speech :-

The teacher said that Soham had written a good story.

Given sentence :-

The stranger said to the boy, “Are you a student of DPS Sharjah?”

Indirect speech :-

The stranger asked the boy if he was a student of DPS Sharjah.

Given sentence :-

Anand said, “We will have a match at the onset of winter."

Indirect speech :-

Anand said that we would have a match at the onset of winter.

  • In changing a sentence from direct into indirect speech, all double inverted commas are removed.
  • The sentence is changed into past tense.

Rules for changing direct speech into indirect speech:-

  • In simple sentences that is used as a linker.

  • If the reporting verb is in past tense then the main verb of the dialogue is also changed accordingly.

  • If the reporting verb is in present or future tense the tense of the direct speech is not changed.

  • Also in case of universal truth the sentence cannot be changed.
