Indirect speech - He said that everything was going fine.

• Indirect and direct speech are the two main types of reporting speech.
• In Direct speech, the words are used to report the message as uttered by the speaker.
• For example - Faiz said, "He will go to Paris next month.
• In Indirect speech, the contents of the speaker are addressed without directly quoting it.
• For Example- Faiz said that he will go to Paris next month.

Rules for converting Direct speech into indirect speech are as follows-

1. The quotation marks are removed.
2. Indirect speech always ends with a period or a full stop.
3. The verb inside the quotation marks is converted to the corresponding tense back in time from the tense in a direct speech.
4. For instance, the simple present tense is changed to simple past tense.

• In the given direct speech. The verb inside the inverted commas is in the present continuous tense (is going), and the tense is changed to past continuous (was going).

Keeping the above rules in mind, the indirect speech of the given reported speech is -

He said that everything was going fine.
