About indirect speech:

  • The sentence that is given in direct speech must be changed into indirect speech.
  • When a sentence is changed into indirect speech, the comma and quotation marks must be removed.
  • The entire sentence is converted into past tense. That is the verbs take the past tense form.
  • The person within the quotation marks must be changed in reported form accordingly.
  • Universal truths will always retain the tense. The tense will not be changed into past.
  • When we have 'says' outside the quotation marks then the tense in indirect speech must be the same as in direct speech.
  • When there is no listener in the direct speech we can introduce a pronoun 'I/he/she'.
