Direct: He said, "Shut the door after you"

Indirect: He said to shut the door after me.

There are two types of speech:

  • Direct Speech - When we relate to the exact words of the speaker in a judgement, it is said to be in direct speech.

Example: Simon said to Asha, " Did you attend the 2016 Rio Olympics?"

  • Indirect Speech - When we report that somebody said or thought in our own words, we use indirect speech.

Example: Simon asked Asha if she had attended the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Rule to change Direct speech into Indirect speech:

  • No inverted commas in the indirect speech
  • Use of that conjunction before the indirect statement
  • The tense of the verb inside the quotation mark must be changed
  • Changing the pronoun
  • Changing the time
  • Always end the sentence with a full stop.
