What is a voice?

A voice helps us determine the relationship between subject, verb and object. There are two types of voices as explained below:

⇒ Active Voice:

The active voice is the basic type of voice which we use in daily life. In active voice, the verb is expressed as being done by the subject. The sentence structure in active voice is:

  • Subject + Verb + Object

⇒ Passive voice

The passive voice is a much more complicated type of voice in which the verb is expressed as being received by the object. Here there is a change in the sentence structure as shown below:

  • Object + Verb + Subject

The places of subject and object and interchanged during change of voice.

How can we change a voice?

Changing the voice of a sentence is simple if we can understand the voice of the sentence given.

If the sentence given has the structure:

Subject + Verb + Object,

then the sentence is in active voice. To change the voice, we need to change the structure to:

Object + Verb + Subject

If the sentence given has the structure:

Object + Verb + Subject,

then the sentence is in passive voice. To change the voice, we need to change the structure to:

Subject + Verb + Object

Identifying voices : Some examples:

1) Sanjana is solving a maths worksheet.

Here, Sanjana is the subject, is solving is the verb and a maths worksheet is the object. The sentence is in active voice. To convert the sentence to passive form, we need to change the structure to Object + Verb + Subject.

  • A maths worksheet is being solved by Sanjana.

2) Milk is given to us by cows.

Here, milk is the subject [actually the object in active voice], is given is the verb and cows is the object [actually the subject in active voice]. The sentence is in passive voice. To convert the sentence to active form, we need to change the structure to Subject + Verb + Object.

  • Cows give us milk.
