✓ A narration is the act of reporting the speech of a speaker.

✓ Narration are of two types:-

  • Direct Narration (Direct Speech):- It is the act of reporting the narration of a speaker without making any changes in it.
  • Indirect Narration (Indirect Speech):- It is the act of reporting the narration of a speaker by making some necessary changes to it.

Examples:-

Direct speech (or narration) :-

He said,"I will win the match today".

Indirect Speech (or narration) :-

He said that he would win the match today.

(a) In Direct Speech:-

  • The direct speech must be separated by the reporting verb using comma.
  • The words spoken by the speaker must be enclosed with " " (double inverted commas)
  • The first word inside the inverted commas must be capital.

(b) In Indirect speech:-

  • The reporting verb must be changed according to the sense conveyed by the speech.
  • The tense of the reporting verb should not be changed.
  • The comma must be removed separating the direct speech from the reporting verb.
  • The inverted commas must be removed.
  • The Indirect speech must be introduced by words like that, whether, why, etc.
  • All the kinds of sentences must be converted into assertive sentences.
  • Some more necessary changes must be made in expressions, places, etc. accordingly.

Some more changes to be considered:-

(a) 1st person (I, we, etc) \longrightarrow The changes must be made according to the subject of the reporting verb.

(b) 2nd Person (You, etc.) \longrightarrow Changes should be made according to the object of the reporting verb.

(c) 3rd Person (He, she) \longrightarrow No changes to be made.
