Hey matey.

answer will be

He told that he was working against heavy odds.

In indirect speech we are basically reporting a sentence said by someone else.

So the tense changes in to past or perfect form.
Like present to past.
past to past perfect.
future to future perfect

and all the demonstrative adjectives also change
this to that
now to then. etc.

hope it helps
