This saying indicates that in order to change people, we must set an example for them by changing ourselves. A similar proverb for this is practise what you preach... If you dont know how to do a particular thing for eg. cooking, dancing, etc. you cannot force others to do so....
I would give an example of our honoured Mahatma Gandhi...
He was once told of advising people to not eat sweets... He told that he will do so after a week.... The people wondered why.. The after a week he advised people to not eat sweets and when the people asked why... he said that he had to first stop eating sweets hinself then he could advise...
