Even before the arrival of British, there was inhumane practice against women especially in the South Indian State of Kerala. 150 years ago, women covering their breasts was considered a crime till 19th century.
At the beginning of 19th century, people from Kerala migrated to Sri Lanka and became aware of social rights and adopted Christianity which allowed women the freedom to cover themselves within and outside the house.
There was battle against this practice. On 26 July, 1859, the British passed a law to liberate women from male prejudices.
