Answer:
Amanda appears to be an inventive young lady who feels constrained by her current circumstances; she is a daydreamer who would prefer to just follow rules of behavior for decent young ladies.
The poem swings between Amanda being chastised for numerous things she doesn't do and Amanda's own quiet witticisms that aren't heard. She chews her fingernails, hunches her shoulder, pushovers while sitting, doesn't complete her schoolwork, walks away messy, neglects to wash her shoes, consumes chocolate when she isn't permitted to and ignores she has pimples.
She is, after all, a child who wishes to relish her existence rather than go through the motions of daily living. She prefers to do activities when she chooses to, rather than when she is instructed to, and her guardians may struggle with her as a result.
But she has an internal liveliness and lives a wonderful life where she might be the solitary occupant, mermaid-like, amid a languid green sea that just dawdles around. She perceives herself as an orphan wandering the streets as she is fed up with the constant barrage of teachings in correct behavior.
She considers silence to be golden, and she enjoys the luxury of independence when she is not told what to do. Amanda's free spirit appears to be torn between her free will and the constraints of suitable social behavior; it remains to be seen whether her artistic soul will conquer in freedom.
