'The Meeting Pool' is a beautiful short story written by Ruskin Bond about three friends who take a pledge to return to their favourite pool after ten years. Their childhood mostly revolved around a pool that was discovered by Rusty and therefore came to be known as Rusty's pool. The secret pool became their meeting point. The pool not only symbolised the bond of friendship between them but also became a part of their consciousness.

Explanation:

Character Sketch of Rusty

  • Rusty, an Anglo-Indian boy, is an orphan who lives in Dehradun with a guardian known as Mr. Harrison. In comparison to Rusty's late parent, Harrison is a stern missionary who beats Rusty with a cane even for small mistakes. Rusty behaves like a caged pigeon, contrariwise Mr. Harrison takes care of him logistically.
  • Even Harrison's wife cares about Rusty, however the Harrisons want Rusty to be a perfect Englishman, so that one day Rusty can go back to his England, his native country, and start his career into some field other than writing. Rusty used to sustain himself by writing short stories, poems and magazines
  • Rusty believes that independence is the most valued asset of any human being, rather than a human right, after interacting with Somi and other Indian friends. Like every other teenager Rusty too loved fun, freedom and love. However, circumstances made him quite lonely and sad .
  • On the eve of Holi festival, when Rusty comes home smeared in color and dirt he gets beaten by Mr. Harrison, but Rusty revolts and beats Mr. Harrison and runs away.
  • Rusty ended the first night outdoors under clear skies and it rained. However, he was adamant not to go back to Harrisons, although realities of the world send jitters to him
  • As a teenager, he falls in love with Mrs. Meena, the mother of the boy whom he used to teach English. However, soon Mrs. Meena dies in a car accident and Rusty's love affair is short-lived and Rusty gets into depression and starts drinking alcohol. He could not bear the death of his first love.
  • At the end when Rusty keeps up his word that he would come to the pool that was discovered by him and his friends and comes to the pool. he was disappointed that his friends had not kept up their promise. However, there is no rancour or bitterness as he understood that with the passage of time, their priorities and needs must have changed

Character Sketch of Anil and Somi

  • Anil and Somi were Rusty's closest friends. Anil was a little dangerous and wild, and subject to mood swings and impulses; however he had a certain animal charm.
  • Somi, on the other hand, was gentle, sensitive in his ways. But in anil and Somi one thing was common they had a sense of fun and an instinct for adventure.
  • Somi was an exceptional swimmer. He dived off rocks and went gliding about under the water akin to a long golden fish. Anil's arms and legs were quite long, and he threshed about with much vigor but he had little skill.
  • After some time Somi passed his matriculation examination and he joined military school while Anil's family moved to Delhi. Unlike Rusty, Somi and Anil did not keep up their word of meeting at the pool after 10 years.
