Explanation:

Antonio seems to be the most interesting and intriguing character of the The Merchant of venice, though throughout the play he is very passive and weak. He is the central character as all the actions of the play revolve around him directly or indirectly. Antonio should be called the protagonist of The merchant of venice as it is the bond story which unifies the main plot with the subplot of the play.

He is a wealthy merchant of venice whose luck when the play begins depends upon the safe arrival of his ships to the harbor as he has invested everything in those ships.

Antonio lends money to his friends whenever they are in need without charging interest. He is a Philanthropist who believes that one of the primary purposes of life would be to do good to others.
