Antonio is a rich merchant of Venice who seems to be a melancholic character in the beginning scene. He says that he takes the world as a stage, where everyone has a role to play, and his role was the sad one.

He is passive in nature.
He is ready to do anything for others without thinking about himself.

He is a lovable and true man. He stakes his life for the sake of his dear friend, Bassanio and signs the risky bond of Shylock just to meet the needs of his dear friend.
