An old and somewhat cantankerous artist who lives downstairs from Sue and Johnsy. He has been painting for four decades without any commercial success, but still hopes to paint what he calls his “masterpiece.” He is an alcoholic and earns money by posing as a model for artists in the neighborhood.

Character sketch of Behrman

Mr. Behrman has been described as a crusty old painter who lived on the ground floor of the same building as Sue and Johnsy. He was past sixty, had a Michelangelo's Moses bear curling down from the head of a satyr along his small body. He was a failure as a painter, one of those artists who always proclaimed to paint his masterpiece but never quite got around to doing it. He earned his living by modeling for other students and drank an excess of gin. However, he was also a fierce little old man who scoffed at softness in anyone and regarded himself as the protector of the two young artists in the studio above.
