Bepin Babu was known as a man who took his work seriously. He worked in his office every day. He was performing a responsible job at a sizable company. He had spent the previous 25 years working alongside this company, and he was known for being a diligent and hard worker.
He is the protagonist of the story and thinks he is sick. When he meets people, they tell him stories about events which he cannot recall at all. This baffles Bepin since he believes that one memory is missing. All of the information that the other gentlemen convinced him of is absent from his memory. Therefore, he finds it convincing enough that he has lost his memory. The incidents and his search for the truth are detailed throughout the entire story. But ultimately, we find out that it was all a lie. His old friend played a clever prank on him as an act of retaliation. Bepin failed to help his friend while he was in need, therefore the friend handled everything. It was all a set up from the beginning; Bepin was always fine.
